This Case in Review presents real-life details from various patient presentations of major depression and associated disease states. As the cases are presented, you will be asked to make decisions regarding the patient’s care and follow-up planning.

OVERVIEW
A middle-aged man who just lost his job, a working woman caring for aging parents, an African American man who just suffered a myocardial infarction—these are patients you see in your practice every day. In this course, you will test your skills in diagnosing and treating patients with depression.

Upon completion of this course, you should be able to:
 
  • Describe the various types of depression and the signs and symptoms of each

  • Discuss the factors that put depressed patients at risk for suicide

  • List treatment options that will effectively manage depression and prevent relapse
